OUR HISTORY

THE EAST TENNESSEE REGION
East Tennessee is home to one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, more than twice the age of the Rockies. The weathered, rolling mountains and rain soaked forest floors are home to some of the world's rarest and most beautiful plants and wildlife, including many amphibians and flowers found nowhere else on the planet. Pioneers forged across the mighty Appalachians over 250 years ago, settling in the foothills where they lived off the land in log cabins like the one pictured above. Long before them, the Cherokee Native American Indian tribe nicknamed the Smokies because of the dense haze and low lying clouds that often blanket the hills and valleys.

East Tennessee is noted for its mountains, particularly the Great Smoky Mountains portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The highest point in the Great Smokies is Clingmans Dome (6,642 feet). A paved road leads to within 300 feet of the summit, and from there visitors can walk a trail to the top. A handicap-accessible tower is located at the summit, and on clear days visitors can see four states (Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia).

The Smokies rise prominently above the surrounding low terrain. For example, Mount LeConte (6,593 feet) rises more than a mile above its base. Due to their prominence, the Smokies receive heavy annual amounts of precipitation. Over 80 inches of rain fall each year, and snowfall in the winter can be heavy, especially on the higher slopes. A small section in the center of the preserve is often classified as a miniature rain forest because it receives over 100 inches of annual rainfall, creating a lush undergrowth that is home to exotic species of animals and insects. Other notable wildlife, such as black bears and bald eagles, can also be found in the region.

APPLEVIEW FARMS PLANTATION
Appleview River Resort is proud to be an active supporter of local preservation and protection agencies. Appleview's own history has been preserved through careful land management. The original farm house and adjoining structures have been meticulously restored and now serves as the club house and the center for hotel services. Throughout our 30 acres, you will find that careful attention has been given to beautifying the resort community.

Long before Appleview River Resort, in 1810 to be exact, the land in and around Appleview plantation was tended to by the Terry family. More content to follow...
